4th National Prakrit Seminar

Call for Abstracts

  • Theme: Sthānāṅga Sūtra (Ṭhāṇaṃ)
  • Dates: 3–5 October 2025
  • Venue: Agra, Uttar Pradesh
  • Organized by: Shrut Ratnakar (Centre for Indological Studies)

Shrut Ratnakar cordially invites scholars and researchers to contribute papers to the 4th National Prakrit Seminar. Building on the success of the 2024 Gohana seminar, which focused on Sthānāṅga Sūtra, this year’s deliberations will address additional unexplored topics from the same text, ensuring fresh perspectives and novel interpretations.

Participants are encouraged to:

  • Highlight unexplored aspects—those not covered by previous commentators and translators—supported by textual, philosophical, or interdisciplinary analysis.
  • Offer innovative interpretations, contemporary relevance, and cross-disciplinary connections (e.g., linguistic, philosophical, scientific, medical, sociological).

A list of suggested topics is provided below. Papers on these topics are welcome; however, topics listed in the “Excluded Topics” section will not be considered.
Suggested Areas of Research (Illustrative)

  • First Sthāna: Interpretation of terms such as ātmā, loka–aloka, dharma–adharma, bandha–mokṣa as existential rather than merely numerical; thematic studies from the 254 topics with new contextual analysis.
  • Second Sthāna: Four uddesakas—dualism in life and universe, causal logic for bhavyatva and abhavyatva, scientific background of sound/language/word, intelligible explanation of micro to macro units of time.
  • Third Sthāna: Triadic cosmology, deep analysis of su-manas, dur-manas, no-sumanas, and no-dur-manas, critical review of triple themes in ālocanā, states of deities’ minds, scientific reading of paternal/maternal bodily elements.
  • Fourth Sthāna: Philosophical exegesis of associated attributes (form, mind, intention, wisdom, conduct, behaviour), zoological interpretation of four Vainateya elephants, new perspectives on fourfold śramaṇopāsaka, infectious aspects of āśīviṣa, musical/dramatic descriptions.
  • Fifth Sthāna: Five types of taste-abstinence, alternative readings of behavioural customs, depiction of five kinds of nirgrantha.
  • Sixth Sthāna: Psychological analysis of six mental states (bhāvas).
  • Seventh Sthāna: Historical and Purāṇic interpretation of seven original gotras.
  • Ninth Sthāna: Medical analysis of nine causes of disease.
